About "The Rainbow Centre"

The Rainbow Centre, (established 1990) is a registered charity based in Fareham, Hampshire that provides Conductive Education services for children with cerebral palsy and other conditions that result in impairment of the central nervous system, causing mobility disorders.  It can also help motor-impaired adults with conditions such as multiple sclerosis, Parkinson’s disease and those recovering from strokes, gain greater mobility and independence.

Clients with motor disorders are taught how to overcome their difficulties by using a proven method of learning developed in Hungary by Professor Petö.  This system of learning concentrates on ability, not disability, builds self confidence and provides support aimed at maximising that ability.

We help disabled babies and young children to learn to do the things that develop naturally in children – such as sitting up, standing, walking, talking – we build on what the children can do rather than what they can’t. We change children’s lives by helping them towards a more independent, confident and fulfilled life.

Approximately two children out of every thousand born in this country have some type of cerebral palsy.  Studies show that at least 5000 infants and toddlers and 1,200 - 1,500 under fives are diagnosed with cerebral palsy each year.  Approximately 500,000 people in this country have some degree of cerebral palsy. However it is not currently known whether the incidence of cerebral palsy is increasing, declining, or staying the same.

Children with very mild cerebral palsy do occasionally recover by the time they are school-aged, (particularly so if they can access Conductive Education services) but cerebral palsy is usually a lifelong disability.  In most cases, the movement and other problems associated with cerebral palsy affect what a child is able to learn and do, to varying degrees throughout their life.

Whilst there are other Conductive Education facilities in the South of England, we are the only specialist facility providing pure Conductive Education that accepts all children (not just those being sponsored/paid for by the local authority) and that operates on a ‘not for profit’ basis. The catchment area is over 5 million people geographically spread.
